Elizabeth Dole Remembers Campaign

July 31, 2000

PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Although she didn’t capture the Republican nomination for president, Elizabeth Dole says the interaction with women during her brief campaign gave her inspiration to last a lifetime.

``It was one of the greatest experiences of my life,″ Dole told a mostly female crowd at a Philadelphia luncheon in her honor. ``As I talked I could see women sit up a little straighter in our audience.

``Women must become involved in the Democratic process. Our voices must be heard,″ she said.

She recalled that, during a campaign stop in Nevada, a young girl asked her if her face would go on Mount Rushmore if she won. ``I want to see a woman,″ the girl told Dole.

``We all do,″ Dole said to thunderous applause. ``It’ll happen in our lifetime. I believe we have helped pave the way.″
