Elephant Said To Be Largest Land Animal In North America
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) _ Peter, an African elephant said by zoo officials in September to be the largest land animal in North America, died at Lion Country Safari, a spokesman said.
The 23-year-old animal died Monday. The cause was not immediately known.
Peter tipped the scales at 13,780 pounds.
He was declared the largest animal on the continent after Lion Country challenged other zoos and preserves to find a larger one. Peter’s closest competitor, an elephant at the Kansas City Zoo, weighed 10,000 pounds.
Peter had a daily diet of 150 pounds of hay and 75 pounds of grain. He snacked on watermelons.
Lion Country Safari is a cageless animal preserve west of West Palm Beach.
