Remains confirmed as those of missing Dracut woman
LOWELL, Mass. (AP) — The family of a Dracut woman who disappeared nearly seven years ago has been given some closure with the news that remains found along the Merrimack River are those of their missing loved one.
Authorities on Wednesday informed Linda Morrissette of Lowell that a shoe along with a foot and ankle bone found along the river bank in West Newbury more than two years ago belong to her sister, 49-year-old Helena Fells.
The Dracut woman had not been seen since November 2006.
Morrissette says she had an inkling the remains found were her sister — she recognized the shoe — but she was “ecstatic” when authorities told her that DNA testing showed that the remains were almost certainly her sister.
Morrissette says she thinks her sister took her own life.
