Van Transporting 12 Inmates Hit

October 27, 2000

LONDON, Ohio (AP) _ A van carrying 12 female prisoners and two sheriff’s officers ran a red light in heavy fog Thursday and struck a truck carrying 700 gallons of fertilizer, the State Highway Patrol said.

At least one inmate was in critical condition and another was in serious condition at Columbus hospitals. Everyone in the van, except for the driver, and the truck driver were taken to clinics; the van driver was treated at the scene.

The Hamilton County sheriff’s van slammed into the TruGreen ChemLawn truck after failing to stop at a red light near London, about 25 miles west of Columbus, police said. The inmates, who were being taken from a Cincinnati jail to the state women’s reformatory in Marysville, were handcuffed and shackled together.

About 100 gallons of fertilizer spilled, but a spokeswoman for the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency said the health risk was minimal. TruGreen spokeswoman Andrea Hughes said the company was helping with cleanup.
