March 7, 1995

MUNICH, Germany (AP) _ The striking metalworkers’ union said today it has reached agreement with employers on a new contract.

A vote by IG Metall union members to end the 12-day strike could occur as early as Thursday, said Joerg Barczynski, a union spokesman.

IG Metall, Germany’s largest union, has been on strike in Bavaria state since Feb. 24. About 21,000 workers at 33 plants have walked out.

It is the German metal industry’s first strike in 11 years.

Werner Neugebauer, negotiator for talks that resumed on Monday and continued through the night until Tuesday, said the two sides had agreed on a two-year contract that includes a 4 percent wage hike.

The union had been demanding 6 percent.
