Singleton Ordered To Pay $2.4 Million In Rape, Mutilation Case

May 7, 1987

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) _ Lawrence Singleton, convicted of raping a Las Vegas teenager and chopping off her forearms nine years ago, has been ordered by a state judge to pay his victim $2.4 million.

But the attorney for 23-year-old Mary Vincent said his client had little chance of collecting the full amount.

″He may be penniless,″ said attorney Keith Galliher. ″I certainly don’t think he accrued anything while he was incarcerated.″

Singleton was paroled last month after serving eight years of a 14-year prison sentence for the attack, but Callifornia corrections officials have been unable to find a community that will accept the former seaman.

District Judge Tom Foley signed an order for Singleton to pay Vincent $1 million in punitive damages, $1 million for pain and suffering and $430,000 for past and future medical expenses.

Her family filed suit against Singleton five years ago, but the case remained in limbo while Singleton was in prison. Foley signed the order this week after Singleton did not respond to the suit.

The judgment, which can be renewed indefinitely every six years, was a ″moral victory″ for Vincent, Galliher said.

″Our chances are remote of getting the $2.4 million, but we’re going to collect all we can,″ he said.

Galliher said he would be pleased if Singleton sold rights to his story for a movie or book because Vincent would get the money. He said money may be forthcoming from Singleton’s pension from the merchant marine.

Vincent, who was 15 when she was attacked near Modesto, Calif., now lives in the Pacific Northwest.
