Ben Stein Gets Robbed

January 13, 2000

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) _ Someone stole Ben Stein’s money.

The host of Comedy Central’s ``Win Ben Stein’s Money″ game show was confronted Jan. 5 by two men, one armed with a handgun, after he parked his car in the garage of his home, police Lt. Edward Kreins said Wednesday.

``They didn’t actually hit me but they did point a gun at me and it was very, very scary,″ Stein said. ``They didn’t seem to know who I was.″

The robbers demanded money, jewelry and his briefcase, Kreins said. The actor handed over his wallet with about $1,000 cash, credit cards and his paycheck. The men then fled on foot.

Stein said the robbery has caused him to change some of his routines and he now has a part-time bodyguard.

``I thought I was totally immune from crime just because I’m a middle-aged, middle-class guy and I never go into bad neighborhoods,″ Stein said. ``I will be eternally grateful to the guys who mugged me that they didn’t shoot me and kill me.″

Stein, 55, who was in the 1986 comedy hit ``Ferris Bueller’s Day Off″ and portrayed the monotone science teacher in TV’s ``The Wonder Years,″ is also a lawyer and writer.
