NICE, France (AP) _ Magdalena Maleeva, who made the semifinals last week in Paris, beat Switzerland’s Patty Schnyder 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 Tuesday in the first round of the $565,000 Terazura tournament.
Maleeva, a Bulgarian ranked No. 20, will next play eighth-seeded Belgian Justine Henin. Henin downed Slovakian qualifier Karina Habsudova 6-4, 6-3.
Also, qualifier Camille Pin of France ousted Tatiana Panova of Russia 3-6, 6-1, 7-5. Panova is ranked No. 34 and Pin is not even in the top 200. Anne-Gaelle Sidot of France downed Maja Palaversic of Croatia 6-3, 6-3.
Venus Williams, seeded first, has a bye into the second round and opens Wednesday against Sidot.
