WASHINGTON (AP) — Authorities say a U.S. Park Police officer was shot while searching a house in Washington.

Police said in a statement that an officer's firearm was unintentionally discharged Wednesday morning, but did not specify if the officer accidentally shot himself or was struck by a bullet from another officer's weapon. A department spokesman declined to elaborate to The Washington Post .

The officer was wounded in the lower extremities and taken to an area hospital. His exact condition has not been released, but police described him as stable.

Park Police spokesman Sgt. James Dingeldein said that the search warrant for the Petworth home stemmed from a previous investigation, and occupants were home at the time of the search.

Further details have not been released.
