Mori to stay as head of Tokyo committee despite cancer
TOKYO (AP) — The head of Tokyo’s organizing committee for the 2020 Olympics says he intends to continue working following an operation to treat lung cancer.
Former Japanese Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori says he had surgery on March 23 but plans to continue as president of the Tokyo 2020 committee.
The 77-year-old Mori, who had an operation for prostate cancer in July 2002, took over the organizing committee in January 2014.
The Tokyo committee’s chief executive officer, Toshiro Muto, also says Mori will continue in his post.
Mori served as prime minister from April 5, 2000 to April 26, 2001.
