Two arrested after man killed in shooting at Maple Heights park

MAPLE HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Two people were arrested in connection with a fatal shooting that happened Wednesday near a Maple Heights park.

Darnez Canion, 20, of Maple Heights, was shot just after 8:30 p.m. near Stafford Park, police said in a news release.

Investigators have not released any information about the two people arrested in connection with the shooting. Charges are pending against both people, police said.

A 911 caller said the shooting happened during a fight involving a large group of juveniles, police said.

Officers went to investigate at the park on Mayville Avenue near Stafford Avenue and found several people at the nearby Milkovich Middle School. Canion was found outside the school with a gunshot wound, police said.

Maple Heights Fire Department paramedics took Canion to University Hospitals Bedford Medical Center, where he died, police and the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner said.

Police have not said where or when the two people were taken into custody.

Bedford, Bedford Heights, Garfield Heights and Oakwood Village officers assisted at the scene.
