Crayton Defends Lightweight Title
LAS VEGAS (AP) _ James Crayton of Las Vegas successfully defended his WBA-North America lightweight title by stopping Jorge Luis Lopez of Mexico in the ninth round Friday night.
Crayton, making his first defense of 135-pound title, halted Lopez with a right to the head. Lopez was counted out at 1:09 of the round. Prior to the knockout, Crayton staggered Lopez with a right-left-right combination.
Crayton, 29, ranked No. 9 by the WBA, started slowly, looking for a one-punch knockout the first four rounds. But he began landing his left jab in the fifth and was effective with his combination, winning the final rounds on all scorecards.
Crayton, who weighed 134 1/2 pounds, was 78-74 on two cards and 77-75 on the third through eight rounds.
Crayton’s record improved to 30-9-2 with 19 knockouts, while the 31-year-old Lopez, 134 pounds, fell to 17-8-1 with 14 knockouts.
