Ohio city prepares to welcome statue of Rutherford B. Hayes
DELAWARE, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio city is preparing to welcome a statue it hopes will revive interest in the nation’s 19th president.
Rutherford B. Hayes is the namesake of Delaware’s high school and the third of eight presidents from Ohio. His 197th birthday on Oct. 4 will be marked by the dedication of a lifelike statue in the center of town.
The Columbus Dispatch reports the statue will be located close to Hayes’ birthplace, which is now a gas station marked with a plaque.
The project has been in the works for a couple of years, with an existing plaza at the city’s crossroads chosen and a fundraising goal of $400,000. It was recently scaled back to cost $125,000.
Delaware Mayor Carolyn Riggle says the Hayes monument will be a lasting asset.
