Md. Lightning Strike Kills One
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) _ Lightning struck nine people gathered under a tree during a storm Saturday afternoon, killing one and seriously injuring two others, authorities said.
Anne Arundel County Fire Department spokesman Capt. Allan Graves said the lightning struck a tree under which the victims waited to resume a rugby tournament at Annapolis Middle School.
The victims, who were mostly players, ranged in age from 20 to 56.
Mary Lou Baker, a spokeswoman for Anne Arundel County Medical Center, said the person killed was a 50-year-old man who arrived at the hospital in cardiac arrest.
Two other victims were released from the hospital with minor injuries. Baker said others would likely be admitted for treatment.
Two more victims were taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where they were listed in serious condition late Saturday afternoon, said Dina Holler, a nursing supervisor.
