Inmate dies at North Carolina jail
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Authorities say an inmate has died at a North Carolina jail.
News outlets report that the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office said 44-year-old Michel Trent was found unresponsive in his cell at the Mecklenburg County jail Tuesday morning. Officials say he was taken to Carolinas Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The Charlotte Observer reports that the jail website lists Trent as a federal inmate who had been in the jail since August, but it doesn’t list a charge. The county’s jails have come under scrutiny after the deaths of five inmates over five months in the last year.
