Dolphins Sign Irwin, Galyon
DAVIE, Fla. (AP) _ The Miami Dolphins signed former New England Patriots guard Heath Irwin Friday and also added former New York Giants linebacker Scott Galyon.
With Irwin’s arrival, the Dolphins released 13-year veteran guard Kevin Gogan, who spent a year in Miami after playing for Oakland, Dallas and San Francisco.
Irwin signed a four-year, $7 million contract that includes a $2 million signing bonus, his agent, Jack Mills, said.
The Dolphins also are expecting former Buffalo Bills guard Ruben Brown to visit Miami next week if he has not signed with Detroit by then.
Irwin, the nephew of professional golfer Hale Irwin, started 13 games for the Patriots last season. At Miami, he will be reunited with former New England line coach Paul Boudreau.
The Dolphins are looking to revamp their offensive line, which struggled most of last season in a running game that averaged just 3.3 yards per carry. They tendered an offer sheet to St. Louis center Ryan Tucker, but he re-signed with the Rams, leaving the Dolphins to re-sign Tim Ruddy.
Galyon spent the last four seasons with the Giants, backing up both outside linebacker positions, primarily in passing situations. He had 20 tackles and one sack last season.
