DE KALB, Ill. (AP) _ Calvin Arrington ran for 133 yards and two touchdowns Saturday night in leading Louisville to a 34-21 victory over Northern Illinois.

The Cardinals (2-0) built a 21-0 lead and the Huskies (0-2) couldn’t recover.

Northern Illinois quarterback Aaron Gilbert passed for three TDs _ two to Deon Mitchell _ and Louisville helped out with three lost fumbles.

Arrington, who had 29 carries, scored on a 6-yard run for a 7-0 lead and Louisville went up 14-0 in the opening period on a 54-yard pass play from Marty Lowe to Robert Bates. Lowe hit Coswell Sims for a 14-yard TD pass for a 21-0 bulge in the second quarter.

Northern Illinois finally got on the board with Rick Anteau grabbing a 2-yard pass from Aaron Gilbert. David Akers kicked field goals of 36 and 26 yards for a 27-7 halftime edge.

Arrington’s 1-yard TD in the third quarter made it 34-7.

Gilbert hit Mitchell with a 22-yard pass in the third and a 14-yarder in the final quarter to close out the scoring.

Gilbert completed 18 of 30 passes for 190 yards but had two interceptions. Lowe was 18-of-37 for 264 yards. Charles Talley led Huskie rushers with 133 yards on 39 carries.

Northern Illinois fell to 18-12-0 in Huskie Stadium openers since 1966.
