Ethiopians win Houston Marathon; Huddle sets American record

January 14, 2018

HOUSTON (AP) — Ethiopians Bazu Worku and Biruktayit Degefa have won the Houston Marathon, while two-time Olympian Molly Huddle has broken the record for the fastest half-marathon ran by an American woman.

Worku, who was trailing countryman Yitayal Atnafu by 23 seconds with approximately 2 miles left, turned on the jets Sunday to win his third Houston Marathon with a time of 2 hours, 8 minutes, 30 seconds. With victories in 2013 and 2014, Worku becomes the third runner to win the race three times, joining David Cheruiyot of Kenya and Stephen Ndungu of Ethiopia.

Degefa captured her second women’s title at the Houston Marathon, finishing Sunday with a time of 2:24:51.

Huddle crossed the half-marathon finish line in 1:07:25. Her time, a personal best, breaks the previous record by 9 seconds, which was set by Deena Kastor in 2006.
