Anthony defeats Brooks to win House seat
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A minister and city official is winning a special election to the state House of Representatives in the Mississippi Delta.
Indianola Alderman Otis Anthony Jr. defeated Leland Alderwoman Barbara Rose Brooks in Tuesday’s runoff in House District 31. The district covers parts of Bolivar, Humphreys, Sunflower and Washington counties.
Anthony gets the final year of a House term begun by Democrat Sarah Richardson Thomas of Indianola. Thomas resigned in June after 21 years in the state House.
Anthony and Brooks were the top two vote-getters among eight candidates on Nov. 6, with Brooks making the runoff on the strength of absentee and provisional ballots.
Anthony and Brooks both identify as Democrats, but candidates in special elections run without party labels.
