Daylami Wins at Belmont

September 12, 1998

NEW YORK (AP) _ Daylami, an Irish import, closed with a flourish to score an impressive 1 1/4 length victory in Belmont Park’s Saturday feature, the $400,000 Grade I Man O’War Stakes for horses 3 and older.

Buck’s Boy raced in the first flight throughout and lasted to be second of nine another 2 3/4 lengths ahead of Indy Vidual who led into the stretch.

The race was marred by a spill when Cetewayo, the second choice, fell while racing a close fifth into the stretch. The horse appeared to take a bad step and fell heavily throwing his rider, John Velazquez forward.

Velazquez then appeared to be pushed by his fallen mount or to crawl into the hedge on his own. Cetewayo arose promptly and appeared uninjured.

Velazquez was taken to the hospital for precautionary x-rays after complaining of pain to his right leg, right hip and lower back.

For Jerry Bailey, who rode the winner, it was the second straight Man O’War victory. He rode Influent to th winner’s circle last year.

Daylami, a multiple graded stakeswinner in Europe, has six victories, two second places and three thirds in 12 career starts.

Daylami covered 1 3-8 miles in 2:13:3 on the firm inner turf course to earn $240,000 for Godolphin Stable. The winner returned $4.50, $3.10 and $2.80. Buck’s Boy paid $4.20 and $3.30 and Indy Vidual was $5.90.
