NEWAK, N.J. (AP) — Authorities say a car fleeing the scene of a fatal shooting in New Jersey’s largest city crashed and burst into flames, briefly trapping its occupants inside.

Essex County prosecutors say the shooting occurred around 9:30 p.m. Friday in the area of Evergreen Avenue in Newark. The victim, 27-year-old city resident Shakeem Bernard, was taken to a hospital but died there a short time later.

The fleeing vehicle crashed in the 200 block of Frelinghuysen Avenue shortly after the shooting. But emergency responders were able to rescue the occupants and none of them were seriously injured in the accident.

Authorities have not said how many people were in the vehicle or what charges they face.

A motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
