Collector Gets Rembrandt Etchings

August 9, 1999

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) _ An avid reader who bought a box of secondhand books for $25 found a little something extra inside _ two etchings by the Dutch master Rembrandt worth an estimated $16,500.

The man, whose name was not released, bought the books last week at a market in Deventer, about 60 miles east of Amsterdam, the daily De Telegraaf reported Monday.

When he emptied the box, the man discovered two etchings in an envelope.

Art historians identified the etchings as the work of Rembrandt. One depicts Rembrandt’s mother. The other shows an image of the good Samaritan.

In May, a Dutch woman pocketed $50,000 after she bought a book for $1 and found two Rembrandt etchings inside.
