Gingrich May Step Down as Speaker

November 6, 1998

WASHINGTON (AP) _ Speaker Newt Gingrich is considering abandoning an attempt to win a third term as leader of the House following GOP reversals in the mid-term elections, Republican sources said Friday.

These sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said no final decision has been made, and that it was possible that Gingrich would remain in the race. Rep. Bob Livingston, chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, launched a bid to topple Gingrich earlier in the day. Other Republicans are considering whether to declare their own candidacies.
