Vicie Opal Merritt of Wayne

VICIE OPAL MERRITT, devoted wife, loving mother and homemaker, was a daughter of the late John Baptist Fry and Fannie Napier Fry. She was born May 4, 1932, in Stiltner, W.Va., a graduate of Wayne High School, professed her faith in Jesus Christ on April 9, 1961, and was a faithful member of Echo United Baptist Church. Vicie joined the Lord Friday, October 5, 2018, in Hospice of Dayton, Dayton, Ohio. She was united in holy matrimony to Reverend Chester Merritt on May 6, 1951. The union was blessed with six children; the first, Douglas Elliott Merritt, preceded her in death on April 16, 1953. Vicie was a beautiful and giving soul, and her influence will forever remain in the lives of all who knew her. She enjoyed working for Dr. Thompson’s Chiropractic office and cherished caring for patients and friends. In addition to her first born, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Fern Adkins, Beanie Brown and Lula Mae Francis; and a brother, Willis Fry. Vicie is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Chester Merritt; three sons, Stanley Merritt (Linda) of Wayne, Brett Merritt (Valerie) of Lavalette, W.Va., Quinn Merritt (Tracey) of Columbus, Ohio; two daughters, Patty Roach (Walt) of Dayton, Ohio, and Aleta Hardwick (Chris) of Lavalette, W.Va.; eight grandchildren, Aaron, Isaiah, Lori, Levi, Jordan, Haley, Seth and Katelyn; five great-grandchildren, Sydney, Bella, Carson, Canaan and Wynn; three sisters, Sarah Hale and Vel Adkins, both of Wayne, Mae Roach (Ray) of Litchfield, Ohio; brother-in-law, Cecil Merritt (Janice); and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. Funeral services were conducted 2 p.m. Monday, October 8, 2018, at Morris Funeral Home Chapel, Wayne, with Elders Roger Maynard and Tommy Damron officiating. Burial will follow at Community Memorial Gardens, Wayne.
