Shaheen: seismic surveys for Atlantic drilling a threat
CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen says the Trump administration’s authorization of seismic air guns to find oil and gas formations underneath the Atlantic Ocean floor is a threat to the state.
Shaheen said Friday the administration is “laying the groundwork for an environmental disaster on New Hampshire’s Seacoast.” She said the tests would be an immediate threat to the state’s fishing industry, in addition to the long-term threat to its economy and outdoor recreation industry posed by an oil or gas leak from drilling.
Shaheen’s a co-sponsor of a bill that would prohibit seismic geological activities in the Atlantic.
The surveys are part of President Donald Trump’s bid to expand offshore drilling in the Atlantic. The plan has drawn opposition from East Coast lawmakers and governors, who say it could hurt commercial fishing and tourism.
