Australia Takes 2-0 Davis Cup Lead
PERTH, Australia (AP) _ Australia took a 2-0 lead in its first-round Davis Cup match against Ecuador on Friday as Pat Rafter and Lleyton Hewitt earned straight-set wins on the grass courts of Royal Kings Park.
Rafter started with a 6-3, 6-0, 7-5 win over Nicolas Lapentti, and Hewitt beat Nicolas’ younger brother Giovanni 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.
In the final set of the first match, Nicolas Lapentti showed signs of the form that carried him to a world No. 6 ranking in 1999. But with the score at 5-5, Rafter broke the 24-year-old Lapentti and then served out the match.
On Saturday, Australia can advance with a victory when Todd Woodbridge and Wayne Arthurs play the Lapentti brothers in doubles.
