Adrift sailboat ran into fishing boat, retrieved by citizens
An unoccupied sailboat drifted into a fishing boat on Sept. 9, pushing both vessels toward the breakwater near the Cap Sante Marina, according to case documents.
Harbor Master Brad Johnson said the two boats were anchored out in the bay, and the sailboat came loose in the wind.
A man using his private boat called police that morning, stating that he was in route to try and retrieve the adrift boat. He was able to free the fishing vessel that was tangled up with the sailboat, according to the case.
The Skagit County Sheriff’s Office contacted the Coast Guard, but it did not respond to the incident, stating the adrift boat would probably just rest against the breakwater. Later the Coast Guard put out a blanket broadcast for assistance with the vessel, but got no response, according to the case.
Johnson said he was not at work that day, but the issue was resolved by the time he returned on Sept. 11. Case documents don’t state when exactly the case was resolved, but Johnson said the sailboat was retrieved by two tenants, and the anchor was reset.
