Man dead, teen injured in shooting at Zelma George Rec Center in Cleveland

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A 30-year-old was killed and a 16-year-old boy injured in a Wednesday evening shooting at Zelma George Rec Center.

The shooting happened about 7 pm. Wednesday in the parking lot of the rec center, according to police. 

A 30-year-old man was shot in the head and later died, police said. The 16-year-old boy was shot in the leg. He was taken to University Hospitals for treatment. 

The parking lot and park was filled with kids at the time of the shooting, Ward 6 Councilman Blaine Griffin said. 

The shooting happened in the middle of the parking lot as youth league football teams practiced, Griffin said. 

A man who witnessed the shooting but did not want to be identified said several girls were arguing and fighting shortly before gunshots erupted. At least a dozen shots were fired. 

Cleveland homicide detectives are at the scene. 

It’s the city’s 98th homicide of 2018.
