Teachers Strike in Eastern Siberia
MOSCOW (AP) _ More than 11,000 teachers in the eastern Siberian region of Buryatia went on an indefinite strike today to demand months of back wages, a news report said.
According to local officials, classes were suspended at 245, or about a third, of the region’s schools because of the strike, the ITAR-Tass news agency said.
The teachers are owed $14 million in back pay, ITAR-Tass said.
The government has accumulated millions of dollars in wage debts to state employees since the fall of the Soviet Union. Some workers have taken desperate measures, including hunger strikes and suicide, to protest their condition.
