Mushroom Club hosting walk to benefit Camp Guyasuta
Anyone looking for an alternative to early-morning shopping on Black Friday might try a mushroom walk at Camp Guyasuta in O’Hara.
The Western Pennsylvania Mushroom Club will host a trek at 10 a.m. Nov. 23 to benefit the Boy Scout-owned camp, which sustained major damage during two summer storms.
Club officers and mushroom identifiers will meet walkers in the second parking lot. The event is free but donations will be collected to help pay for flood repair efforts.
Camp Ranger Mike Daniher said three of the camp bridges were destroyed during a July flood, and two more were damaged. Costs total about $450,000.
“Many trees were uprooted and they downed many light poles supplying power,” Daniher said. “Mud flowed down the hillside and into the swimming pool and shelters.”
The camp is used by thousands of youth and adults each year for scouting, team-building and environmental education.
