Notre Dame 80, DePaul 77, OT

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) _ Daimon Sweet scored a career-high 26 points, including the go-ahead shot with 38 seconds left in overtime, to lead Notre Dame to a 80-77 victory over DePaul on Wednesday night.

A shot by DePaul’s Steven Howard with 7 seconds left in overtime was partially blocked by Keith Tower, and tipped by Kevin Ellery to Sweet.

DePaul (16-8) led 70-68 with 39 seconds left when Tower mad a 5-footer to send the game to overtime.

The Irish had a chance to win it at the end of regulation. With 6 six seconds left, Brad Niemann of Depaul missed a shot from the top of the key. Sweet pulled down the rebound and drove the length of the court, but he missed a short shot at the buzzer.

Elmer Bennett scored 21 for the Irish, including 15 in the first half.

Terry Davis led DePaul with 25, David Booth had 21 and Steven Howard had 14.

Notre Dame (11-16) took its biggest lead with 8:59 left in the first half, 26-17, on a basket by Bennett.

But DePaul went on a 19-6 run to take a 36-32 lead on Booth’s free throw with 3:02 to go in the half. DePaul led 40-38 at the break.

DePaul led by as many as eight in the second half. But Notre Dame chipped away and finally tied the score 59-59 with 8:39 left.
