NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) _ Chile’s Ricardo Acuna, rested and ready after an overnight delay, quickly polished off Bahamian Roger Smith on Monday to give Chile a 3-2 victory over the Commonwealth Caribbean in second-round Davis Cup American Zone play.
The decisive match was halted by darkness Sunday night with the two players even at two sets each and 4-4 in the fifth set.
After the 16-hour delay, Acuna needed just 15 minutes to dispose of Smith 8-6, 8-6, 3-6, 6-8, 6-4.
Acuna won both his singles matches and combined with Hans Gildemeister as Chile won the doubles to get out of the Bahamas with the victory over the upset-minded Caribbean team.
Chile will meet Brazil, a 3-2 winner of Uruguay, in the American Zone semifinals July 24-26.
The Caribbean team had advanced to the second round of the Davis Cup for the first time in 21 years with a victory over Cuba, while Chile had a first- round bye.
