Duncan, Mueller win skicross World Cups in Italy

SAN CANDIDO, Italy (AP) — David Duncan of Canada completed a skicross double on Sunday to move to the top of the overall freestyle World Cup standings, while Katrin Mueller claimed her second win in three races in the women’s event.

Duncan, who won his first career World Cup race on Saturday, beat Andreas Matt, Daniel Bohnacker and fellow Canadian Brady Leman.

“It’s an incredible feeling and I struggle for words to truly describe how much it means to me to get that first win and not to have to wait 24 hours to get a second one in,” Duncan said. “This is the stuff you dream of. You never really expect it to happen, even though you work your butt off for it. Everything kind of went my way.”

Duncan leads Matt by nine points after five events, with Leman in third, 44 points behind his compatriot. The win also guarantees Duncan — who missed the 2010 Olympics with a broken collarbone — a spot on Canada’s team for the 2014 Sochi Games.

Mueller of Switzerland edged out Marielle Thompson of Canada, who took over the lead in the standings with her second-place finish. Heidi Zacher was third with Germany teammate Anna Woerner fourth.

Thompson is 14 points ahead of Mueller and Switzerland’s Fanny Smith, who are tied for second.
