Man charged following shopping center standoff
PLAINVILLE, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut man holding an unloaded, plastic BB gun has been arrested and charged following a standoff with police.
Plainville Police say they responded to a report of man firing a gun behind the Connecticut Commons shopping plaza Friday afternoon. They found 44-year-old Eduardo Rivera holding a gun near the loading docks.
Surrounding businesses were temporarily evacuated. Officers tried to negotiate with the New Britain man, but say he did not comply with orders to drop his gun.
Police ultimately used non-lethal beanbag rounds to subdue Rivera and discovered the weapon was just a toy.
Rivera has been charged with falsely reporting an incident, interfering with an officer, breach of peace, reckless endangerment and carrying a dangerous weapon. He’s currently in custody and it’s unclear if he has a lawyer.
