Broncos Rookie Unaccounted For

July 29, 2003

DENVER (AP) _ Broncos rookie defensive tackle Nick Eason didn’t show up for practice Tuesday, and the team wasn’t sure where he was.

Jean Krcelic, one of Eason’s agents, said Eason was still in the Denver area and will probably return in a day or two. Krcelic said he had not spoken to Eason but had spoken with his family.

The 6-foot-3, 301-pound Eason, one of Denver’s three fourth-round draft picks, reported to training camp last week and participated in the first four days of workouts.

Broncos defensive coordinator Larry Coyer said Eason might have been overwhelmed with the physical and mental toll of training camp. Eason had been getting more repetitions in practice with veteran Daryl Gardener sidelined up to two months by wrist surgery.

Krcelic didn’t rule that out.

``With Daryl Gardener out, obviously they are a little thin at D-tackle,″ Krcelic said. ``Because of that, the guys that are there are getting more reps, which can be tough on a rookie like Nick. I’m not saying that’s why he left, but it’s a possibility.″

The Broncos drafted Eason out of Clemson with the 114th overall pick, just before taking his college linemate, Bryant McNeal.
