Glarner Knights brush by Pirates

NEW GLARUS — Jaylynn Benson scored 23 points and Lexi Krause added 19 for New Glarus in a 65-51 Capitol South win over Waterloo on Tuesday.

New Glarus (6-6, 1-2 in conference) opened the game on an 18-2 run, but Waterloo (10-3, 1-2) rallied to trail by one late in the first half and took a 39-38 lead in the second half.

“We got down to start the game and clawed our way back,” Waterloo girls basketball coach Gabe Haberkorn said. “Down the stretch, they made free throws and we missed our last 10 to 12 shots.

“We came out facing some adversity. We got punched in the face and the girls fought back. We didn’t play our best defensive game, but it took everything for New Glarus to beat us. We wasted too much energy crawling back from being down 16 early. It is what it is. It’s disappointing, but we’ll learn from it and do what we need to do the next time to beat them.”

Senior guard Brittney Limoseth scored 19 points and added six rebounds and three blocks to lead Waterloo. Senior guard Kaitlyn Filter added 15 points, five rebounds and four steals. Senior forward Melanie Renforth hauled in six rebounds.
