Central Connecticut 70, Hartford 66

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Ricardo Scott scored 10 points in a one-minute and 33-second span late in the game to help Central Connecticut defeat Hartford 70-66 in the opening round of the Phoenix Classic Wednesday night at the Hartford Civic Center,

Central (3-1) plays Yale (4-2) Thursday for the championship. Yale defeated Holy Cross 70-66 in the other first-round game.

Scott made three 3-pointers during his scoring spurt. He made a free throw after his last one with 4:45 to play to put Central ahead 62-55. Jon Popofski led the Blue Devils with 16 points, while Scott had 14.

Jerell Parker led the Hawks with 19.

Central missed its first 10 shots and had six turnovers. Hartford vaulted to a 10-0 lead behind Parker’s four points and the Hawks making four of their first nine shots.

Central finally scored with 12:27 remaining in the half when Justin Chiera made three free throws, after being fouled on a three-point try from the right wing to make the score 10-3.

Two threes by Popofski, eight points and seven rebounds by Rich Pittman and a Chiera three at the buzzer gave Central a 28-24 halftime lead.

The victory by Central was its fourth in a row against Hartford (2-3) in the Phoenix Classic.
