December 24, 1998

MILWAUKEE (AP) _ Sean Mason scored 15 points and No. 20 Wisconsin won its eighth straight game, holding Marquette to 10 points in the first half in a 61-45 victory Wednesday night.

The Badgers are off to an 11-1 start for only the second time since 1930 and they have won seven consecutive road games, tying the school record set in 1911-12 and 1915-16.

Marquette (7-5) was 3-of-22 shots (14 percent) from the field in the first half and never recovered.

The Golden Eagles got within 33-22 with 13:46 to play, but Wisconsin went on a 13-4 run to regain control.

Brian Wardle led Marquette with 16 points.

Marquette’s only lead of the game was at 9-8 on a field goal by Mike Bargen with 10:30 left in the first half. The Golden Eagles made just one free throw the rest of the half.

Wisconsin ran off the next 15 points after Bargen’s basket for a 23-9 lead with 3:21 left.

The Badgers benefited from several Marquette mistakes during that run, including a turnover, an offensive foul and missed free throws on the front end of bonus situations.

A free throw by Marquette’s Greg Clausen ended a 7:37 scoring drought, but Wisconsin scored the next four points for the 27-10 halftime lead. Wisconsin held Marquette to a season-low for first-half points.
