Cory Booker on Friday declared his bid for the presidency in 2020 with a sweeping call to unite a deeply polarized nation around a “common purpose.” The New Jersey Democrat, who is the second black candidate in a primary field that’s already historically diverse, delivered his message of unity amid an era marked by bitter political division. _ Higher medicine sales and lower restructuring and other costs lifted drugmaker Merck to a $1.83 billion profit in the third quarter, as it edged past Wall Street expectations. The maker of blockbuster cancer drug Keytruda and Januvia diabetes pills lost $1.05 billion a year earlier, when it had a $2.92 billion tax bill due to a federal tax overhaul. _ MOTHER-INFANT FOUND DEAD _ A man accused of strangling his estranged wife and suffocating her infant daughter has been convicted on two counts of murder.
_ FAKED FALL _ Police have arrested a New Jersey man who they say faked a slip and fall at a business to get insurance money.
