Westmeyer boots Herd past Dukes in shutout
HUNTINGTON — Marshall University men’s soccer opened the season Friday night with a 1-0 defeat of the Duquesne Dukes on Hoops Family Field at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex.
Jonas Westmeyer’s goal from an assist by Kelan Swales with 2:51 left in the first half held up. Thundering Herd goalkeeper Paulo Pita recorded the shutout.
Attendance was 724 for the second game of a women’s and men’s doubleheader.
Marshall is at home for its next match at 7 p.m. Monday against Oakland University.
DAYTON, Ohio — University of Dayton’s Lauren Bruns recorded 15 kills Friday and the Flyers opened their invitational tournament with a 3-0 defeat of Marshall. Dayton won 25-19, 25-23, 25-15.
Brooke Westbeld of the Flyers added 20 assists and 10 digs.
Marshall players Ciara Debell and Joelle Coulter had 12 and 11 kills respectively. Gabrielle Coulter notched 24 assists and Amber Weber made 12 digs.
The Thundering Herd continues in the tournament Saturday against South Alabama at 10:30 a.m. and Ball State at 5 p.m.
HUNTINGTON — Tennessee-Martin downed Marshall 3-1 in the women’s portion of a soccer doubleheader Friday at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex.
Marshall (0-2-1) lit the scoreboard first when Farah Abu-Tayeh scored unassisted at 4:15. The Skyhawks (1-1-0) responded with consecutive goals from Danae Kaldaridou, Amy McGivern and Skylor Keane.
