‥MeToo shifts California Capitol culture, but with hitches
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Staffers, lawmakers and lobbyists say the party scene in California’s capital has mellowed since the #MeToo reckoning hit Sacramento last fall, prompting the resignations of three lawmakers and pledges of change.
But several reports of bad behavior — sexual and otherwise — have recently surfaced.
Republican Sen. Joel Anderson was kicked out of a bar on Aug. 13 for allegedly threatening to hit a female lobbyist, and a union president was accused of shoving a lawmaker earlier in the month.
Both incidents resulted in formal complaints to the Legislature.
Observers say the coming weeks will provide a test of whether cultural change has truly taken root, as the current legislative session ends and election season kicks into high gear.
