Two Seriously Injured in Running of Bulls

July 10, 1989

PAMPLONA, Spain (AP) _ A bull gored two men Monday, the fourth day of the weeklong San Fermin Festival, and 45 others suffered cuts and bruises.

The bulls of the Andalucian ranch of Salvador Guardiola ran the half mile to the bull ring in 2 minutes, 45 seconds as an estimated 1,000 runners ran with them.

Spaniards Joaquin Haya and Miguel Martin were gored and underwent surgery, a hospital spokeswoman said. Haya, 34, suffered a chest injury and Martin, 28, was injured in the thigh.

The rest of the injured were treated for bruises and cuts at several Red Cross posts.

Ernest Hemingway’s novel ″The Sun Also Rises″ described in detail the rowdy festival that starts each morning with the running of the bulls.

The festival began July 6 and ends Friday.

On each day of the festival, six bulls run to the bull ring, where they are killed by professional bullfighters.

Since 1591, bulls have gored 52 people to death, according to city records.
