Two Trains Collide During Evening Rush Hour in Germany, Setting Off Fiery Fuel Explosion and Injuring at Least 100 Passengers, Officials Say
Three cars loaded with diesel fuel blew up in the collision of a commuter train and a freight train near the town of Lehrte, east of Hanover, officials said. Firefighters were working to keep the flames from spreading to a fourth freight car.
Police spokeswoman Ingrid Luetzner said a train engineer and a female passenger were seriously injured. People with less serious injuries gathered at a makeshift first aid station near the scene.
The cause of the accident was not immediately known.
