NFL Newsletter Publisher Indicted

March 8, 2002

PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Fred Edelstein, publisher of a gossipy newsletter covering the NFL, was indicted Thursday on check kiting charges.

Edelstein, 50, already was facing federal wire fraud charges when he was charged with processing 66 checks worth $394,500 between May 2000 and October 2001.

Edelstein, who publishes the Pro Football Insider, could not be reached for comment late Thursday.

He was indicted in July on federal charges that he defrauded 11 people, including former Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Bill Bergey, out of more than $945,000 in investments and loans. Some were repaid, but investors lost about $600,000, prosecutors said at the time.

According to the new indictment, the kited checks were written on accounts in the names of Fred or Susan Edelstein and of Supam Inc., which does business as the Pro Football Insider.
