Rhein Fire 12, Monarchs 7
DUESSELDORF, Germany (AP) _ Manny Buergsmuller and Danny Kight each kicked two field goals as the Duesseldorf Rhein Fire beat the England Monarchs 12-7 Saturday to clinch a berth in the NFL Europe’s World Bowl.
Kight’s 41-yard field goal with 1:56 remaining in the third quarter put the Rhein Fire ahead for good, 9-7, in the penalty-filled game.
Burgsmueller’s 19-yarder with 35 seconds left sealed the win for Duesseldorf (7-1).
The Monarchs (1-7) scored the game’s only touchdown on a 9-yard pass from Josh LaRocca to Reggie Jones in the third quarter.
The Rhein Fire’s sputtering offense had one touchdown called back on an offensive holding call and twice bogged down on the Monarchs’ 1-yard line.
Kight kicked a 41-yard field goal in the first quarter, and Buergsmuller added a 36-yard field goal for the Rhein Fire.
Rhein Fire quarterback Mike Quinn completed 13 of 30 passes for 192 yards. LaRocca was 16-of-33 for 166 yards with three interceptions.
