Clovis man convicted in 2017 shooting of girlfriend in head

October 10, 2018

CLOVIS, N.M. (AP) — A Clovis man accused of shooting his girlfriend in the head during a fight last year has been convicted in the case.

Prosecutors say a Curry County jury found 34-year-old Joshua Martinez guilty of aggravated battery on a household member with a deadly weapon and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

A sentencing date hasn’t been set but prosecutors say Martinez could be facing a prison term of up to 21 1/2 years.

Police say the woman told them Martinez shot her in the wrist and head while she was wrestling the gun from him in June 2017.

She underwent surgery and eventually recovered.

Martinez already had arrest warrants from a May 2017 incident involving kidnapping, armed robbery, aggravated assault and other charges and is facing another trial.
