Siemens Celebrates Commercial Operation of CPV Valley Energy Center in New York State
WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct 1, 2018--Siemens celebrated Competitive Power Ventures’ (CPV) Valley Energy Center achieving full commercial operation in Wawayanda, New York. The natural gas-fueled combined cycle power plant (CCPP) has a gross installed electrical capacity of nearly 675 megawatts (MW) and is now supplying reliable electricity to more than 600,000 homes across the lower Hudson Valley. Siemens’ technology will help reduce energy costs by $700 million, based on projected forecasts.
CPV’s Valley Energy Center uses two Siemens SGT6-5000F gas turbines, one SST-5000 steam turbine, and three SGen-1000A generators. The gas turbines and generators were manufactured at Siemens’ Charlotte Energy Hub, the global base for the company’s 60 Hz power generating equipment. The Valley Energy Center will provide efficient, reliable, and clean power to help meet New York States’ low-carbon energy and sustainability goals, in part, by capturing excess exhaust heat from Siemens’ F-class combined cycle gas-powered turbines to power the plant’s steam turbine.
Siemens will also service the plant’s major components and parts through a long-term contract, and handle outage services, program management, engineering support, and remote diagnostics and monitoring. As part of its long tradition of working with CPV, Siemens’ Financial Services (SFS) division supported this project, providing $80 million of the total $540 million construction / term loan.
“Our technology, service, and financing partnership with CPV’s Valley Energy Center in New York is a model for how Siemens can provide efficient, reliable, and low-carbon power to customers across the country while meeting state and local clean energy goals,” said John Gibson, Country Division Lead for U.S. Power and Gas, Siemens. “Siemens looks forward to providing homes and businesses throughout the lower Hudson Valley region with affordable and reliable energy.”
“I’m proud to announce the commercial operation on natural gas of the CPV Valley Energy Center. After nearly 10 years of development and construction, we are providing significant value to the area and New York,” said CPV CEO Gary Lambert. “This facility will enhance the reliability of the Lower Hudson Valley electric system, reduce annual electricity costs to New York consumers by a forecasted $700 million while reducing carbon emissions by an estimated 500,000 tons a year. We look forward to being an integral part of the community for decades to come.”
