Argentinian Wins Clay Court Tourney

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) _ Top-seed Jason Stoltenberg of Australia fell to Herman Gumy of Argentina 7-6, 7-6 in second-round play Thursday in the Clay Court Championships.

Meanwhile, defending champion Jim Courier cruised to a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Spain’s Galo Blanco in second-round play.

Stoltenberg fought off six match points, including a 0-40 deficit while serving at 5-6 in the second set, before succumbing in the 2-hour, 28-minute match.

Courier, seeded fifth, faces Max Mirnyi of Belarus, who defeated France’s Rodolphe Cadart 6-2, 7-6.

In doubles, brothers Bob and Mike Bryan of Camarillo, Calif., defeated third-seeded Lan Bale and Grant Stafford of South Africa 7-6, 6-2. Americans Brandon Coupe and Mark Merklein, a former NCAA doubles champion at Florida, beat Mexico’s David Roditi and Paul Rosner of South Africa 6-4, 7-6.
