Astros 3, Padres 2
HOUSTON (AP) _ Jose Lima tied for the major league lead with 11 victories, allowing two runs in eight innings to help the Houston Astros beat the San Diego Padres 3-2 tonight.
Lima (11-2) struck out a season-high 10 and gave up six hits and three walks to tie Boston’s Pedro Martinez. Billy Wagner pitched the ninth for his 16th save in 17 chances.
Tony Gwynn returned to the Padres lineup for the first time since being disabled May 22 with a strained right calf. He went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI before leaving the game as planned after five innings.
Paul Bako hit a leadoff homer off Donne Wall (4-1) in the seventh to put the Astros up 3-2.
San Diego took a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Eric Owens hit a two-out double and scored on Gwynn’s 2,976th career hit. Jim Leyritz followed with an RBI double.
Houston cut the lead to 2-1 on Richard Hidalgo’s 12th homer, leading off the fifth inning.
The Astros tied it in the sixth when Jeff Bagwell doubled and scored on a triple by Carl Everett.
Notes: San Diego 2B Quilvio Veras (right knee) made his first start since May 29. ... Houston is 14-3 against left-handed starters this season.
