LOS ANGELES (AP) _ A gang member who killed the 20-year-old granddaughter of former Police Chief Bernard Parks was sentenced Friday to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Samuel Sharad Shabazz was given eight additional consecutive life sentences and 115 additional years for eight attempted murders in a series of drive-by shootings.

A jury earlier this month convicted Shabazz, 20, of the crimes. Parks’ granddaughter, Lori Gonzalez, was shot to death while sitting in a car with a friend outside a fast food restaurant in May 2000. Authorities say the shooting was retaliation for another gang shooting.

Parks, who left office in April, was in the courtroom Friday. ``Closure does not come, but certainly justice was served today,″ he said outside court.
